What Are RSIC-V Clips?

RSIC-V clips are a low cost alternative to an old fashioned RC channel setup.  Unlike RC channel, RSIC-V clips with hat channel are impossible to install incorrectly and will provide a noticeable improvement in STC ratings over resilient channel.  If combined with Green Glue you can get good results in both high frequencies and low frequencies.

Advantages to the RSIC-V Clip

  • Dirt Cheap:  RSIC-V clips cost next to nothing when compared to other resilient sound clips.  The cost of RSIC-V clips is also pretty compareable to a resilient channel setup, but provides performance in high frequencies twice of what resilient channel can.

  • One Screw Installation:  Like the RSIC-1 clip, RSIC-V also can be installed with just a single screw.  While this clip doesn't install twice as fast as the IsoMax or WhisperClip, it will definitely save you around 15 minutes per 100 clip.

  • Decent STC Performance: RSIC-V clips don't perform well in low frequencies at all, but they do perform well in high frequencies.

Disadvantages to the RSIC-V Clip

  • Minor Improvement In Low Frequencies:  Improvements in lower frequencies are very minimal compared to the RSIC-1 clip (same clip, but with a thick neoprene bumper).

  • Same Amount of Installation Effort As Other Clips:  The work put in to installing this clip will be the exact same as the RSIC-1.  The results, however, will be considerably less than the RSIC-1, WhisperClips, and IsoMax clips.  With the amount of effort required to actually setup a resilient sound clip system it usually makes more sense to buy the highest performing clips since you will already be going the extra mile in setting up a clip system.

How Many RSIC-V Clips Would I Need?

Estimating how many resilient sound clips you need is the same for WhisperClips, IsoMax clips, RSIC-1 clips, or RSIC-V clips.

You will want to space the sound clips 48" apart for maximum resiliency, but you will need to decide whether you should space your hat channel rows 16" apart or 24" apart.

16" on center: Space your hat channel 16" on center if you are using 3 layers of drywall.

24" on center: (The recommended spacing of hat channel) Space your hat channel 24" on center if you are using 1 or 2 layers of drywall.  We recommend two layers of drywall for improved results in low frequencies.  Also, all sound tests you will see for any resilient sound clip is done with 24" spacing of hat channel.

Layout is another aspect to estimating resilient sound clips. There are two options for laying out your resilient sound clips.  The standard layout uses the least amount of clips and is the most common way to layout resilient sound clips.  The other option is the staggered layout.

It is believed that the staggered layout increases the effectiveness of the clips being used.  You may notice from the layout images in our resilient sound clip installation guide that the staggered layout uses more clips than the standard layout.  The staggered layout will require you to include roughly 10% more clips to your estimating total over the standard layout.  We suggest using the standard layout since the increase in performance of staggering the clips is minimal and ultimately costs more money and takes more time to layout a staggered clip pattern.

How Do I Install RSIC-V Clips?

Clip Spacing and Hat Channel Spacing For Typical Installation

Standard or Staggered Layout: You will want to decide between the standard layout or the staggered layout when installing your clips.  The standard layout method will work with the equation above and staggered layout will require roughly a 5% increase in the number of clips needed.  The images below shows the difference between the standard layout and staggered layout.  Staggered layout is believed to improve results slightly and tests for sound clips typically utilize staggered layout patterns.

Installing Clips: Installing clips is simple and does not require hiring a contractor.

  • Do not use resilient sound clips over the top of existing drywall.  If you cannot remove drywall and need to improve sound isolation, then Green Glue is the product you are looking for.

  • These clips outperform standard resilient channel by more than 10 STC points and are nearly impossible to install incorrectly unlike resilient channel.
