The QuietBox is designed to maintain the acoustic rating of your ceiling while allowing you to use attractive lighting in your room. There are other ways to reduce sound transmission through your recessed lighting, but this method is based on sound principles with a consistent theme of decoupling, damping, and mass.
The QuietBox 6 is made to fit the Halo 6" H7ICT and Halo 6" H7ICAT recessed lighting housing. The QuietBox 4 is made to fit the Halo 4" H99ICT recessed lighting housing. These models are the basic recessed light housing for new construction that you would find at any Home Depot or Lowe's hardware store.
The exterior frame of the QuietBox is 3/4" MDF and the interior layer is 1/2" Type C drywall (for fire rating). Sandwiched between these two materials is the renowned Green Glue Compound. We have applied the Green Glue Compound at a rate of about 1 tube per 10.6 square feet which is in line with what we call the Supreme application level of Green Glue Compound. The angles of the drywall layer are sealed with Green Glue Sealant and a hole is pre-drilled to allow for electrical wiring to pass through. We recommend the use of (2) RSIC-DC04 clips to install our QuietBox in a decoupled ceiling. These clips are available at a discounted rate with the purchase of a QuietBox. If your ceiling drywall is not decoupled from your framing then installation with common framing members will suffice.
This product is manufactured in house by the employees of Sound Isolation Store and is available exclusively by Sound Isolation Store. With this, we guarantee the quality of construction including the materials used to construct the box, the methods used to construct the box, and the ease of installing the QuietBox.
Custom Sizes
We do offer custom sized QuietBoxes, but require a minimum quantity of 15 boxes. Please contact us with the brand and model of your recessed housing so we can design a box to fit your dimensions. Lead time on custom boxes varies from order to order, but is typically 1 week plus transit time.
Where To Buy Housings To Fit Our QuietBox
As mentioned above, any Home Depot or Lowe's will stock the H7ICT or H7ICAT for the QuietBox 6 and H99ICT for the QuietBox 4. As well as most electrical wholesale suppliers across the United States. An online source we have found to ship quick, for free with large orders, and for the lowest unit price is Westside Wholesale at www.westsidewholesale.com. Search their site for the housing model number to find the correct housing.
The QuietBox allows you to use recessed lighting in your ceiling without reducing the acoustic integrity of your ceiling. The mass of the 3/4" MDF and 1/2" Type-C drywall is more significant than double layer 5/8" drywall so there is no loss in mass. In addition to the mass, the QuietBox also utilizes Green Glue Compound. The Green Glue Compound is applied liberally at a rate that is the equivalent of 3 tubes per 4' x 8' sheet of material.
If you are using double layer drywall and Green Glue on your ceiling then the QuietBox will perform at least as well as your ceiling. If you are installing sound clips on your ceiling then the inclusion of the RSIC-DC04 clips will help maintain a consistency in your theme of decoupling. In terms of sound isolation, think of the QuietBox as an extension of your ceiling. The level of performance the QuietBox provides will in no way negate the isolation performance of your ceiling.
Competing Recessed Light Isolation Products
There are other products on the market for dealing with sound isolation and recessed lighting. These products will not maintain the acoustic integrity of your ceiling for a couple reasons. First, the competing products are not made for a specific type of recessed light. The problem with this is they don't offer a tight seal around the entire light housing, but rather 'sit' on top of the attachment arms of the housing. This leaves a large gap around the entire perimeter of the light for sound to pass right through.
Second, the competing products do not provide mass and damping, but rather just absorption. Absorption is an important part of sound isolation, but it will not isolate your lighting properly. A product designed for isolating recessed lighting must add significant mass and damping for any real improvement in isolation. If the product only provides absorption then you may as well just drape insulation over the top of the light. Keep this in mind when deciding which product you choose to isolate your recessed lighting. You will only have one chance to choose the right product so it is important to make the right choice from the start.
Our QuietBox is attached directly to your joists using RSIC-DC04 clips or common framing members. The RSIC-DC04 clips are available at a discounted rate with each box and very easy to attach to both the joist and the QuietBox. Using the RSIC-DC04 clips is recommended for ceilings with drywall decoupled from the joists. Damp and mass ceilings do not require the use of RSIC-DC04 clips, but are still recommended for maximum performance. The attachment of the QuietBox is very simple, but does require electrical work to bring power to the recessed light. We can only provide installation help in regards to the box itself.
