The QuietBox (Patent Pending) is designed to maintain the isolation rating of your ceiling while allowing you to use attractive lighting in your room. There are other ways to reduce sound transmission through your recessed lighting, but this method is based on sound principles with a consistent theme of decoupling, damping, and mass.
The QuietBox is designed to work with IC rated recessed light housings from a variety of manufacturers. This large QuietBox will fit the smallest to the largest of IC rated housings. Check our Compatibility tab to find more information on which housings fit in our QuietBox. The list does not include every recessed light so refer to the product specs for interior dimensions to see if your IC rated housing will fit our QuietBox.
The exterior frame of the QuietBox is 3/4" MDF and the interior layer is 5/8" Type-X drywall (for fire rating). Sandwiched between these two materials is the renowned Green Glue Compound. We have applied the Green Glue Compound at a rate of about 1 tube per 10.6 square feet which is in line with what we call the Supreme application level of Green Glue Compound. The angles of the drywall layer are sealed with Green Glue Sealant and a hole is pre-drilled to allow for electrical wiring to pass through. The recessed light housing will attach inside the QuietBox using the included Velcro strip. Each strip is over 19" long with an adhesive on one side to stick to the QuietBox and housing. We recommend the use of (2) GenieClip LB clips to install our QuietBox in a decoupled ceiling (ceiling with resilient clips or resilient channel). These clips are available at a discounted rate with the purchase of a QuietBox. If your ceiling drywall is not decoupled from your framing then installation with common framing members will suffice.
This product is manufactured in house by the employees of Sound Isolation Store and is available exclusively by Sound Isolation Store. With this, we guarantee the quality of construction including the materials used to construct the box, the methods used to construct the box, and the ease of installing the QuietBox.

The QuietBox allows you to use recessed lighting in your ceiling without reducing the acoustic integrity of your ceiling. The mass of the 3/4" MDF and 5/8" Type-X drywall is more significant than double layer 5/8" drywall so there is no loss in mass. In addition to the mass, the QuietBox also utilizes Green Glue Compound. The Green Glue Compound is applied liberally at a rate that is the equivalent of 3 tubes per 4' x 8' sheet of material.
If you are using double layer drywall and Green Glue Compound, or a pre-damped drywall product, on your ceiling then the QuietBox will perform at least as well as your ceiling. If you are installing resilient clips on your ceiling then the inclusion of the GenieClip LB clips will help maintain a consistency in your theme of decoupling. In terms of sound isolation, think of the QuietBox as an extension of your ceiling. The level of performance the QuietBox provides will in no way negate the isolation performance of your ceiling.
Competing Recessed Light Isolation Products
There are other products on the market for dealing with sound isolation and recessed lighting. These products will not maintain the acoustic integrity of your ceiling for a couple reasons. First, the competing products are not made for a specific type of recessed light. The problem with this is they don't offer a tight seal around the entire light housing, but rather 'sit' on top of the attachment arms of the housing. This leaves a large gap around the entire perimeter of the light for sound to pass right through.
Second, the competing products do not provide mass and damping, but rather just absorption. Absorption is an important part of sound isolation, but it will not isolate your lighting properly. A product designed for isolating recessed lighting must add significant mass and damping for any real improvement in isolation. If the product only provides absorption then you may as well just drape insulation over the top of the light. Keep this in mind when deciding which product you choose to isolate your recessed lighting. You will only have one chance to choose the right product so it is important to make the right choice from the start.
Our QuietBox is attached directly to your joists using GenieClip LB clips or common framing members. The GenieClip LB are available at a discounted rate with each box and very easy to attach to both the joist and the QuietBox. Using the GenieClip LB clips is recommended for ceilings with drywall decoupled from the joists. Basic damp and mass ceilings or standard ceilings do not require the use of GenieClip LB clips, but are still recommended for maximum performance and ease of installation. The attachment of the QuietBox is very simple, but does require electrical work to bring power to the recessed light. We can only provide installation help in regards to the box itself. Is our QuietBox too tall for your joist cavities?
Remember, if your ceiling will have more than one layer of drywall, resilient clips, or resilient channel, then the QuietBox will need to be lowered so it is flush with the back of the finish layer of drywall. This can allow anywhere from 1/2" to 2" of extra joist space. Still need more space? Run each side of the QuietBox through a table saw. The height of the QuietBox is very easy to customize using this method. Some re-nailing or gluing may need to take place to restore the assembly of the QuietBox, but not typically. We estimate this customization to take maybe one minute per QuietBox. The same customization can be made if the QuietBox is too wide for your joist cavity. Contact us for more information on customizing the QuietBox if you need further guidance.| QuietBox Product Specs | View Data |
