Installation Warnings

As we all know, being electrocuted is not the greatest thing in the world.  We are not electricians by any means and neither are most of our customers.  Please educate yourself on how to properly wire lighting to meet building code and also educate yourself on safety concerns related to the installation of recessed lighting.  Turn off all circuit breakers that are supplying power to the electrical switch that will turn on your lights.  Use a basic voltage tester to make sure the power is in fact off before you begin the wiring process.

Installing the QuietBox Between The Joists

Planning For Multiple Layers Of Drywall Or A Resilient Sound Clip System
If you are hanging only one layer of drywall from your joists or from hat channel then the bottom of the QuietBox will need to be attached so it is flush with the bottom of the joist or the bottom of the hat channel.

If you are hanging two layers or more then you will need to lower the QuietBox to match the added depth.  In other words, only the final layer of drywall will overlap the QuietBox and each additional layer will need to butt against the side of the QuietBox.

This allows the finish trim kit for the recessed lighting to be installed flush with your ceiling.

Attach the First RSIC-DC04 Clip and the QuietBox
Attach the first DC04 clip with the rubber bumper against the joist about 1" on center from the bottom of the joist.  This spacing allows the attaching screws to screw through the QuietBox without coming in contact with the recessed lighting housing.

The screws to attach the DC04 clips to the joists should be 2 1/2" coarse thread screws.  The screws to attach the DC04 extension arm to the QuietBox should be 1" or 1 1/4" coarse thread screws.

Attach the Second RSIC-DC04 Clip
Once the first DC04 clip is attached to the joist and to the QuietBox you can now attach the second DC04 clip opposite of the first DC04 clip.  Make sure the QuietBox is installed level so the final layer of drywall will lay flush with the bottom of the QuietBox.

Each QuietBox weighs about 14 pounds so have a helper hold up one side of the box while you attach the first DC04 clip.

Friendly Tip:  It is advised to accurately measure the placement of the box based on how many layers of drywall you are going to install.  The finish trim kit for the light housing will allow for up to an inch in measurement error so it is not required to be 100% perfect.

Important Tip When Pre-Wiring:  Make sure to leave yourself enough electrical wire when pre-wiring your lighting.  The height of the QuietBox is eight inches so we estimate that you will want around
12" - 14" slack from where the light will be located.

It is very easy to trim extra wire if you end up running long, but very difficult to add wire if you end up running short.

Pull Wiring and Seal the Hole
You can now pull your wiring through the pre-drilled hole to prepare for wiring your recessed lighting.  Once the wiring is pulled you can then seal any remaining gap with the included 1 1/4" strip of putty pad.

Prepare the Light Housing

Remove the Recessed Light Extension Arms
There are three tiny tabs on each extension arm that keep the extension arm within the track.  Using a pair of pliers you will need to twist these tabs so they are parallel with the extension arms.

Remove the Extension Arms
Once the tabs have been twisted you can now maneuver the extension arms out of their track and completely remove them from the light housing leaving only the main frame.

Compress the 'Track Tabs'
The tabs that held the connecting arms against the housing need to be bent in towards the housing so they do not protrude past the housing. When bending the tabs in be careful not to bend the entire side of the housing as you will need this part to be flush with the inside of the box.

Friendly Tip:  This is an important step in fitting the housing inside our QuietBox.  If the housing does not fit within the box then you likely still have tabs protruding past the side of the housing.

Attach the Light and Finish the Ceiling

Attach the Wiring To the Light
Before connecting the wiring make sure your light fits inside the QuietBox.  We test every box to make sure it fits with a properly prepared housing.  If your does not fit then the side tabs are likely not entirely compressed.

Once you are sure the light fits you can now attach the appropriate wiring following the instructions included with each Halo recessed light.

Friction Fit the Light and Screw Into Place
After wiring the light you will need to friction fit the light into the QuietBox.  Technically the light housing can be held in the QuietBox without attaching any screws.  However, we do recommend using at least one screw to attach the light housing to the QuietBox.  The screw required to accomplish this is a 1 1/2" screw.  This screw will go through the MDF, drywall, and into the side of the light housing without hitting the canned light or the wiring box attached to the housing.

Seal the Perimeter Of the Box
This step is optional, but can provide an increase in isolation due to the tighter seal it will provide.  Apply SilenSeal acoustical caulk to the perimeter of the MDF before hanging the final layer of drywall.  The SilenSeal will come in contact with the drywall eliminating the possibility of an air gap after the drywall is installed.  If the box is installed flush and level then this step can be avoided.

El Fin
You have now successfully installed a QuietBox to isolate sound from passing through your recessed lighting.  Consider the QuietBox an extension of your ceiling as the performance of the QuietBox is equal to the performance of a wall with double layer drywall and Green Glue.
