Improving Sound Isolation With Windows
Primary Suggestion: Mass and Damping Window Plug
Here's what you will need:
- 3/4" MDF
- Green Glue Compound (1 tube per 16 square feet)
- 1" or 1 1/4" screws to screw the two layers of 3/4" MDF together
- 1x framing material to lock window plug in place
- Option: Add cabinet handles so you can remove the window plug with ease.
- Note: Alterations in the design of the window plug can be made. Different thicknesses of MDF or replacing the Green Glue Compound with 1 or 2 LB MLV is possible.
Cost: Estimated at about $50 for all materials plus the cost of labor.
Secondary Suggestion: Add Second Window To Existing Frame
Here's what you will need:
- Another window that matches the existing window
- Acoustical sealant to seal the perimeter of the new window
Cost: Depends largely on window size and market value. Double glazed windows are strongly suggested.
Tertiary Suggestion: Replace Low Performing Window With Double Glazed Window
Here's what you will need:
- New double glazed window
- Acoustical sealant to seal the perimeter of the new window
Cost: Depends largely on window size and market value. Cost of labor and possible requirement of demolition/replacement of exterior finish can increase costs considerably.
DO NOT USE a foam window plug to isolate sound. They simply are not effective.
