Sound Isolation Strip is a neoprene foam strip that is 1 1/4" wide x 1/4" thick. We sell this product in 25' long rolls. Each roll has an adhesive backing which helps to install the strip in any location without the use of additional fasteners. There are many places you can use this strip, here are a few:
Permanent Spacer On Resilient Clip Walls: Sound Isolation Strip, used with a resilient sound clip system (Green Glue Clips, RSIC-1, or GenieClip), is designed to maximize wall resilience and sound control. A 1/4" gap is required between the drywall and the floor when setting up a resilient sound clip system. This strip is 1/4" tall and 1 1/4" wide which makes it perfect as a permanent 1/4" shim between the floor and the bottom of the drywall. In this situation if you do not use the strip then you will need to use temporary wood shims and then after the drywall is hung you will need to fill this space with Green Glue Sealant or another acoustical caulk. However, using our Sound Isolation Strip saves you money on acoustical caulk, saves you time not having to caulk the 1/4" gap, and provides a more true seal below the drywall. This same concept can be applied around the wall and ceiling perimeter as well.
As A Decoupler For Walls and Floors: The performance you will receive from this method is very minimal, but it is definitely an option. This would involve applying Sound Isolation Strip to every stud or joist and then attaching drywall or the sub-floor directly over the joist tape. When used in floors it will also help reduce squeaking between the sub-floor and the top of the joist. Do not consider this a stand alone method of isolating sound, but rather a way to increase your rating by 1 or 2 STC points.
Replacement For Acoustical Caulk: Acoustical caulk is used to fill any gap when trying to soundproof a room. Sometimes gaps are too large to fill with caulk, whether from a cost perspective, availability of caulk, or simply the gap is too large for the caulk to actually support itself in the gap.
As with all of the products sold online through Sound Isolation Store, Sound Isolation Strip is manufactured entirely in the USA.
Permanent Spacer On Resilient Clip Walls: For installation as a permanent spacer you simply need to add up the total linear feet of wall space. Each roll is 25' long so you will need to round up to the nearest number divisible by 25.
As A Decoupler: For installation on wall studs or floor joists, count the number of studs or joists you are going to apply the strip to and multiply by the length of each stud.
The best use for the Sound Isolation Strip is for sealing the perimeter, mainly along the floor, of a decoupled wall. Since the drywall is held off the framing 1 1/2" on a clipped wall, the gap beneath the drywall can become quite a difficult gap to fill without accidentally dispensing large amounts of caulk behind the drywall rather than directly below the drywall. Sound Isolation Strip solves this problem because it will properly seal a double layer of 5/8" drywall along the entire 1 1/4" wide x 1/4" tall gap that is required for proper installation of a resilient sound clip system.
Another benefit to using the Sound Isolation Strip is to soften the connection between any two rigid materials. Whether that is wood to wood, wood to drywall, the back of speakers to a wall, or the bottom of A/V component to shelving. Just peel, stick, and apply. The results for this will be noticeable and cost effective.
Sound Isolation Strip is a peel and stick product. The strip comes in rolls with release paper on one side of the roll for attaching to any clean, dry surface without additional attachments. The adhesive on the Sound Isolation Strip is strong and depending on the surface you apply it to, it can be permanant.
