What Are Putty Pads?

Putty pads are used to keep sound from passing through outlet boxes or other openings in walls and ceilings.  Not only are these pads acoustically rated, but they are also fire rated.  Many 'cheaper' pads sold are only acoustically rated which makes your walls less safe.  Play it safe and make sure to buy putty pads that are rated for both acoustics and fire.

Outlet boxes are known sound leaks in wall and ceiling assemblies. A wall designed for noise control will not perform to expectations when outlets are unsealed, particularly when outlets are back-to-back in the same stud cavity.

These putty pads can be hand formed around the back of the outlet box to prevent this common sound leakage problem in stud walls.  The STC rating for our putty pads is 50 so the use of these pads will help maintain the higher performance you receive from our other isolation products.

We sell our Putty Pads in packs of 5.

Where Should I Use Putty Pads?

Putty pads should be used any time the aggregate area of the boxes will exceed 100 square inches per 100 sq. ft. of wall.  Consider each common single gang outlet to be 28 square inches.  Use the formula of width x height x depth = square inches of outlets.  So on a common 8' tall wall that is 12' long you will need to have 3 outlets or more to need putty pads.

If you have less outlets than this, then we still suggest to make sure your outlets are completely sealed off.  This means the openings in the back of the outlets where the wires run through need to be filled with caulk and where the sides of the outlet box meet the drywall need to be sealed off as well.  And of course insulate your walls and have the insulation run behind the outlet box instead of butting up to the outlet box.

Avoid placing outlets in the wall back to back with an outlet from an adjacent room.  If your outlets are already installed this way then you should use putty pads to help block this flanking transfer of sound.

This is a much better setup since sound will have to travel through the outlet, the insulation, and then through the drywall to reach the adjacent room.  A properly sealed outlet with acoustical caulk will suffice for this setup as long as your wall does not contain several outlets.

How Many Putty Pads Would I Need?

Each putty pad is 7" x 7" and can properly cover one single gang electrical outlet box.  Two pads will be needed for a double gang or triple gang outlet box.  Three pads will be needed for a quadruple gang outlet box.

Each case of putty pads includes 5 pads.

Preparation

  • Surface shall be free of dirt, grease, oil, rust, release agents, water repellents, and any other substances that may affect proper adhesion.
  • All wiring shall be completed before installation of the Putty Pads.

Installation

  • Peel off release paper from one side of the putty pad and position the pad on the back side of the box.
  • Peel off release paper from the back side of the pad before you begin forming to the outlet.
  • Wrap the entire back and sides of the box with the putty pad.
