Green Glue Sealant (SilenSeal) is a water based, no VOC acoustic sealant developed and manufactured by the Green Glue Company. Green Glue Sealant was designed to be a user friendly, very high performance acoustical sealant. Green Glue Sealant is used to seal edges and joints and under the base plate to prevent noise leaks whereas Green Glue Compound is used in between layers of drywall. Green Glue Sealant is not your basic silicone or latex caulk. You will notice a dramatic difference between this product and others during use in your sound isolation project.

When comparing prices with other acoustical sealant and with regular caulk, it is important to compare the size of tubes as well as function and usability. Some will say to just use silicone caulk because it performs the same. For cost comparison, silicone caulk costs 20% (includes shipping costs as well) more than Green Glue Sealant and is packaged in tubes less than half the size. Green Glue Sealant is packaged in 28 ounce tubes that fit with quart sized caulking guns-the same sized tubes that Green Glue Compound is packaged in. For product comparison, acoustic caulk like Green Glue Sealant does a better job at remaining permanently flexible and does not shrink. This helps you to fill large gaps with speed and efficiency.

If you were to use Green Glue Sealant on a wall or ceiling where the sheetrock is hung well, you can estimate around 1 tube per 100 square feet of wall space or ceiling space. If you are using Green Glue Sealant on both layers of sheetrock then be sure to include both layers in total square footage.

It is difficult to measure the exact amount of Green Glue Sealant you will need for your project, but these numbers have been mostly successful for our customers. If you need help estimating for Green Glue Sealant then please contact us.

Green Glue Sealant is impossible to test as a standalone product. However, there have been tests done on walls that were not properly sealed compared to walls that are properly sealed. An improperly sealed wall can result in at least a 15 point reduction in STC rating. It is clear that an acoustic caulk is an important ingredient to maintaining a high STC rating. If you have gaps in your walls or ceilings then sound will easily pass through. Green Glue Sealant keeps this from happening.

There is some misconception on where Green Glue Sealant should be used and how much acoustical caulk is really required. In sound tests for products like Green Glue Compound and resilient sound clips, an acoustical caulk is used to seal each joint and the perimeter of the test wall. Some people interpret this as Green Glue Sealant is required between every joint and angle regardless of how the wall is finished. This is definitely not the case. If the wall is going to be taped and textured then the majority of the wall will already be sealed. You can still seal these joints and angles with Green Glue Sealant, but the improvement in performance will be minimal.

Please follow the guidelines below when using Green Glue Sealant:

Wall that will be finished (taped and textured): Use Green Glue Sealant along the floor to fill the gap between the bottom of the drywall and the floor and around outlet openings between the outlet box and the drywall. Most installation efforts will not require more effort than this.

Wall that will not be finished (i.e.- bare drywall): Use Green Glue Sealant along every joint and perimeter angle. As well as around each outlet opening in your walls and ceilings.

Floors: Caulk each joint of your sub-floor and then along the perimeter of the room. If your finished floor is attached mortar or glue then there is no need to seal the gaps in the sub-floor. If the gaps are unusually large then you will still want to fill them with a caulk before finishing the floors.

Bottom Plates: Follow these guidelines:

Bad: Sealant under frame only. Sound can easily enter and exit the wall cavities.

Good: A good start for remodeling jobs where you are adding drywall to an existing wall.

Very Good: Beads under drywall to keep sound from leaking into the cavity, and under frame for redundancy
