Estimating
For This
Product

If you plan to install our QuietGround Underlayment on your floor, then follow these steps for estimating how much you need:

  • Measure the width of the floor and round up to the nearest foot divisible by four (i.e. a 10'6" width would round up to 12'). This number will be represented as 'A'.
  • Measure the length of the floor. Round up to the nearest foot (i.e. 7'9" would be 8'). This number will be represented as 'B'
  • Multiply A x B. The result is 'C'. This is the total square feet of QuietGround Underlayment required to cover your floor or ceiling.
  • Divide C by the width of the roll which is 4'. This final number is the total linear feet required to cover your floor or ceiling.

Allow for around 5% to 10% waste depending on the complexity of your room. The more corners then likely the more waste. You can piece scrap sections together using a standard vinyl duct tape, but make sure the seams are tight so the acoustic integrity of this product is not compromised.

QuietGround 500 1/2" nominal thickness is an acoustical underlayment designed to dramatically reduce structure-borne noise and airborne noise. This version is 12 MM thick and provides 2 pounds per square foot of mass. QG 500 is more of a specialty underlayment that is used in situations that require a higher level of isolation for structure-borne noise and airborne noise. QG 500 far exceeds national building code and property association sound reduction requirements.

Easy and fast to install, QG 500 will also help reduce minor sub-floor imperfections. Versatile to use with most floor constructions, concrete or wood, and surfaces of laminate, hardwood, engineered wood, carpet, and tile. In head-to-head sound testing, QG 500 outperformed the competition in real world situations. QG 500's dense recycled rubber granules provide superior compression resistance so you can enjoy its benefits much longer than with most other underlayment.

QG 500 is fabricated from thousands of small rubber granules and offers superior underfoot comfort for standing, walking or exercising. The weight and durability of QG 500 allows the rubber to provide a limited warranty for the life of the floor. Other underlayment fail to provide the firmness necessary to resist compression from foot traffic and/or heavy furniture. QuietGround is manufactured entirely in the USA with recycled rubber. QuietGround also provides no odor unlike most competing recycled rubber underlayment. This product is impervious to moisture, mold, and mildew which allows this underlayment to act as a moisture barrier beneath your flooring.

Example: This example floor layout does not have equal dimensions for width and length so to properly calculate for the amount of material required you will need to break this floor into sections. The first section will include section 2 and 3 which have overall dimensions of 10' W x 12' L. Round the width up to the nearest number divisible by four which is 12 and then multiply that by the length of the section which is also 12. The resulting number is 144 and this is the total square footage needed to cover section 2 and 3. The remaining area, section 1, of this floor example is 6' W x 6' L. Round the width up to the nearest number divisible by four which is 8 and then multiply that by the length of the section which is 6. The resulting number is 48 and this is the total square footage needed to cover the final section. Add the number 144 and the number 48 together and then divide that number by the width of the rolls which 4' to find the total linear feet of material required to cover the floor. The resulting number will be 48 linear feet which means (2) 4' x 30' rolls of QuietGround 250 will easily cover this floor leaving a little in scrap material.

QG 500 will provide a significant increase in performance for isolation of both airborne and structure-borne noise. The IIC rating of this material varies largely on the sub-floor and the type of finish floor. Concrete sub-floors will rate better than wood sub-floors and a hardwood finish will rate better than a tile finish. A high IIC rating can only be achieved by the use of a rubber underlayment like our QuietGround or by decoupling the bottom side of the ceiling with a resilient sound clip system.

The STC rating of QuietGround 500 will also depend largely on the type of sub-floor and finish floor. The QG 500's STC rating is anywhere from low 50's to low 60's depending on the type of sub-floor and type of finish floor. Much like the IIC rating, hardwood flooring and concrete sub-floor will provide the best overall performance. This high of an STC ratings can only be achieved in floors by the use of a rubber underlayment like our QuietGround or by decoupling the bottom side of the ceiling with a resilient sound clip system.

QuietGround can be installed in a floating floor fashion or glued down. We recommended to not glue the underlayment down to maintain resiliency, but if the flooring installed over the QuietGround will need to be glued down then you will need to glue down the underlayment as well. The steps to installing this product are very straight forward so we will just provide a few tips to help ensure a successful installation:

  • Be certain the sub-floor is clean, dry, smooth, level and structurally sound. Ensure that any nail heads are flush, smooth out any other sharp sub-floor protrusions and fill any holes, gaps or indentations.
  • Variations in floor level over 1/8” within 3 feet span should be leveled before installing underlayment.
  • Layout the QuietGround so it is perpendicular to the floor beneath it (only relevant to installation over wood). This will help reduce seams.
  • It is recommended to unroll the QuietGround and flip it over to allow the curl of the roll to relax.
  • Keep the seams tight. It is also recommended to use a standard duct tape to help hold the seams together.
  • Do not use any nails, screws or other attachments to secure QuietGround to your floor. You can glue this underlayment to the floor, but it is important not to penetrate the QuietGround material.
  • Cut the QuietGround to allow for a 1/8" to 1/4" gap along the perimeter of the room. Do not leave more than a 1/4" gap along the perimeter of the room.
  • If you are planning to glue the QuietGround down, then use a 50+ pound roller to ensure proper adhesive transfer. The glue you use must be polyurethane based and cannot be a petroleum based adhesive. Glue application should be a solid coat with a 1/8" V-notched trowel.
  • Hold base board 1/16” off the floor to help reduce flanking paths.
